Triathlon Basics

Everything you need to get to the start line — and across the finish.
Most people spend their first couple of seasons figuring this sport out by accident — buying the wrong gear, training at the wrong intensities, guessing at nutrition, and wasting a lot of time and money doing it. This guide is the shortcut past all of that. It is the guidance I wish I’d had when I started.

By the end of it, you’ll be able to:

01
Know exactly what gear you need for swim, bike and run — and what you can safely hold off on buying.
02
Recognise the signals your body sends before an injury becomes a real problem.
03
Set up TrainingPeaks, a power meter or smart trainer, and Zwift properly, without guessing.
04
Know what to eat and drink before, during and after training — backed by real research, not gym folklore.
05
Walk into race morning already knowing what to expect, minute by minute.
06
Talk about this sport with real confidence, whether that means hiring a coach or joining a club.

“As a triathlon coach, If I can speed up the learning curve, everything becomes so much easier. This is why I built the guide and it’s been created from the most frequently asked questions I get asked most by new triathletes”

Start with the Orientation block

Four weeks on your TrainingPeaks calendar, built the way I build a private client’s first month — every session comes with a short lesson on what it’s for and how to do it. No card taken, nothing to cancel.

LOW VOLUME

3–3.3 h a week + deload

New to structured training, or your week has very little slack in it.

MODERATE VOLUME

5–5.7 h a week + deload

Already swimming, riding or running most weeks. The right fit for most people.

HIGH VOLUME

8–9 h a week + deload

Coming in from running, cycling or swimming with real training history.

Each block deliberately starts at the low end — the first month is about learning the sessions and building the habit. Not sure which fits? The 60-second check on the next page picks for you.

Most online training plans are a fixed 12- or 16-week file written for an athlete with a perfect schedule. Miss a week, add a race or get sick, and the plan doesn’t know, and you’re left wondering how to proceed. Training Blocks are completely flexible and are build around your life and your schedule.

New to structured training? Orientation Block is the best first month. Already know your zones and your way around TrainingPeaks? Skip it and start Training Blocks today. And if the program doesn’t work for you, we’ll give you a full refund within your first 60 days.

Training Blocks: stacked coloured blocks
WHAT IS A TRAINING BLOCK?

One block, one clear purpose

Each block is one to six weeks of structured swim, bike, run and strength built around a single goal: Base 1–3, Build 1–3, a Peak and a Race Week matched to your race distance, a 1–3 week Taper, or Transition. Finish one, pick the next based on where you actually are, and stack them into a season.

Already a KTC Group Training member?

Racing outside our summer season? Add Training Blocks.

The club program is built to peak for summer racing. If your key race is in the spring or fall, like an April half marathon while the club is still in build, Training Blocks lets you train for your race and still swim with your squad.

Club swims + your blocks

Keep swimming the club workouts. Your Training Blocks handle the bike, run and strength around your own race dates.

One key race

Blocks for your race window

Follow the club program most of the year, then switch to blocks for the peak, taper and race week of an off-season race.

Full control

Blocks for everything

Run Training Blocks for your whole season and drop into the club sessions that fit your plan.

How to set it up

  1. Enter your race dates in the Season Builder to see which blocks to run and when.
  2. Apply your block in TrainingPeaks from the Block Finder.
  3. Load the KTC swims-only plan for the same month from the Members Area.
  4. Delete the block’s swims and keep the club swims.
Replace, don’t addEach club swim replaces a block swim, so your week keeps the right balance of easy and hard. It takes about ten minutes a month in TrainingPeaks.

Training Blocks is a separate membership that runs alongside your group program. Questions about blending the two? Ask Cory.

6 months for $49.95 is one month free compared with paying monthly ($9.99 × 6 = $59.94). Prices plus GST. Cancel any time from your account. 60-day money-back guarantee: if you don’t like the program or it isn’t working for you, contact us within 60 days of joining and we’ll refund everything you’ve paid.

THE SEASON BUILDER

Tell it your race year. It builds your season.

Put in your races, your current training, the hours you actually have and anything that hurts. In about two minutes the Season Builder lines up every block from today to race day, sets your volume level, and tells you exactly which block to load next. It follows the same periodisation I use with my private athletes.

What athletes are saying

“It was so easy to follow the plan and learn as I trained. It was more of a training program than a simple training plan. I now have the confidence to continue my structured training.”
